Woodlawn is more than just a museum; it is Ellsworth's largest public park. It is truly a part of the community, and we invite you to come and enjoy the park, gardens, and grounds which are open year round, sunrise to sunset.

Get Involved at Woodlawn and help Preserve the Past.

The Woodlawn estate is more than just a house, it also a Public Park with over two miles of wooded trails, several large fields, orchards and wonderful gardens which combine to create a full palette of color all year long.

Col. John Black built the trails as exercise tracks for his horses. Later, his grandson, George Nixon Black Jr., drove his automobiles on them. Now, Ellsworth residents cross-country ski, snowshoe, run, and walk on those same trails. Benches are provided near the peaceful lily pond and at the edges of fields for everyone's enjoyment. Near the pond, granite pillars mark a side trail to the family tomb, resting place of Col. Black, his wife Mary, and other family members.

A clipped lilac hedge encloses the formal garden and tea lawn that were first designed in 1903. In the 1930s, the Trustees consulted Beatrix Farrand about the restoration of the grounds. Horse chestnut trees were replanted, as were hemlocks to complete the setting.

Today, volunteers continue to tend the garden, grounds, and trails as an annual labor of love ensuring that the Public Park is maintained for the community.
