Woodlawn Museum holds a number of special events throughout the year! Often sponsored by local businesses, these events offer the community an opportunity to come together to have fun, learn, and interact with one another. Here is a calendar of this year's events. Dates and times are subject to change.

2010 Spring Events

April

  • Friday, April 9th, 9 a.m.-12:00 noon - Tree Identification Workshop with foresters Keith Kanoti and Jim Ecker, Maine Forest Service
    Following a powerpoint presentation, foresters Keith Kanoti and Jim Ecker will take you along Woodlawn's trails to teach you how to identify trees using the "Winter Key". Dress appropriately. In case of inclement weather, call 669-6111 about cancellation. Cost: Your donation to help Woodlawn develop more programs is greatly appreciated.

  • Tuesdays, April 13th 20th, 27th, May 4th, 6 p.m. -9 p.m. - Acrylic Landscape, a Painting Class with artist Thia Embers
    If you want to learn the basics or just want to brush up on your skills, this class will get you ready for a summer of landscape painting. Working from photographs, students will focus on creating a realistic image and learn how to notice value contrast, detail, and how to mix colors. Students will provide their own materials. A list will be provided upon registration. Cost: $120 for members/$130 for non-members.

  • Thursday, April 15th, 7 p.m. - A lecture with Ted Ames, Hatchery Director, Penobscot East Resource Center

  • Friday, April 16th, 9 a.m-12:00 noon - Care of Metal with Rosamond Rea, Woodlawn's Collection Manager
    This class will teach you how to properly care for your treasured metals. Learn when, how and with what to polish your silver and brass; discuss daily cleaning dos and don'ts; and design some low-cost storage methods to optimize the longevity of your treasures. Woodlawn collections will be used as examples. Come dressed to do some polishing. Materials will be supplied. Cost: $40 for members/$50 for non-members.

  • Monday, April 26th, 7 p.m. - Hot New - or Old - Plants for Cool Gardens
    A free program offered by the Ellsworth Garden Club Join us for a roundtable presentation and discussion featuring Ellsworth Garden Club's commercial members, master gardener volunteers and other friends of the Club.

  • Tuesday, April 27th, 9 a.m.-12:00 noon - Learn to Make Your Own Precious Metal Clay Jewelry with artist Lisa Salsbury from Willow and Me
    Create a one of a kind fine silver pendant from (PMC) Precious Metal Clay. This easy- to-use clay consists of microscopic silver particles suspended in an organic binder. PMC can be worked much like any modeling clay. It is then fired at a high temperature, burning away the binder and leaving a pure silver piece. With very few tools and a bit of imagination, anyone can make beautiful jewelry with PMC. Participants will come away with a finished necklace and a taste of working with PMC. Cost: $50 for members/$60 for non-members.

  • Thursday, April 29th, 7 p.m. - Starlit Communities: Stewardship for a New Resource with Peter Lord, Executive Director of the Island Astronomy Institute
    Peter will introduce the Island Astronomy Institute and its collaboration with Acadia National Park to measure, promote and protect the night sky and outline the principles of effective lighting that conserve energy, and increase public safety, while protecting wildlife and human health. He will explain why genuine community stewardship offers our best hope for protecting Maine's Starlit Communities. Cost: Your donation to help Woodlawn develop more programs is greatly appreciated.

  • Friday, April 30th, 9:30 a.m-11:30 a.m - Pressed Flowers with MDI artist Lucy Tracy
    Participants will learn how to turn pressed flowers into beautiful cards just in time for mother's day. Instruction will be given on how to press flowers and which flowers work best. Cost: $35 for members/$45 for non-members.

  • Monday, May 3rd, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. - Turtles and Truffles With Heather Fowler
    Delicious chocolates are perfect gifts for mother's day and other holidays. Learn how to make your own chocolate turtles and truffles with Heather Fowler, local chocolatier and owner of Heather's Whoopie Pies. Cost: $35 for members/$45 for non-members.

  • Tuesdays, May 4th, 11th 18th, 1-5 p.m. (raindates Thursdays, May 6th, 13th, 20th) - Envisioning Your Perfect Garden, a hands-on workshop with Woodlawn's Garden Coordinator Jennifer Crain.*
    Create your own personalized garden map and planner to visualize your garden throughout the year and into the future. This course will help you plan future garden renovations, document plant locations, ensuring proper crop rotations. You will learn how to create a to-scale garden map which will become an indispensable tool for designing and maintaining your garden for years to come! All experience levels are welcome. Materials will be provided. This is a hands-on class so come prepared to be outdoors for part of each session. Cost: $130 for members/$140 for non-members.

  • Saturday, May 8th, 9 a.m.-10 a.m. - Blue Orchard Bees and Native Pollinators, with Master Gardener Volunteers Theresa Guethler.
    Learn how to attract native pollinators to your garden. This workshop will include displays of handmade "homes" to provide shelter for these important pollinators.

    10 a.m.-11:30 a.m - Honey Bees in Maine with Andrew Dewey
    Some of the topics discussed by Mr. Dewey include data on how many beekeepers are in Maine and how many are hobbyist or commercial beekeepers and how many hives come in for pollination and who brings them in. Cost: Your donation to help Woodlawn develop more programs is greatly appreciated.

  • Thursday, May 13th, 7 p.m. - The Hudson Museum; a lecture with Gretchen F. Faulkner
    Join us for an illustrated talk by museum director, Gretchen F. Faulkner, who will present an overview of the museum's history and collection of over 8,000 ethnographic and archaeological objects. Participants are welcome to bring a Native American art object for identification. Cost: Your donation to help Woodlawn develop more programs is greatly appreciated.

  • Friday, May 14th, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. - Floor Cloth Art Workshop with artist Patience Sampson
    Participants will learn the technique for this wonderful decorative art popular in the 18th century by creating a 2' X 3' floor cloth made of durable canvas. Cost is $60 for members/$70 for non-members and includes all material. Bring a bag lunch. Register early. This class will fill up quickly.

  • Friday, May 21st, 9 a.m-12:00 noon - Scrapbook or Ephemera Album Preservation with Rosamond Rea, Woodlawn's Collection Manager
    In this hands-on workshop participants will learn how to preserve scrapbooks and albums for future generations to enjoy. Participants are encouraged to bring a scrapbook or ephemera album. Each participant will make an archival box suitable for scrapbook storage. Materials will be supplied. Cost: $40 for members/$50 for non-members.

  • Saturday, May 22nd, 10:30 a.m-12 noon - Lasagna Gardens
    Master Gardener Volunteer Martha Goss will show you how to create a garden bed on top of the ground, using thick newspaper or cardboard to smother the grass and layers of compostable material to create a raised bed to plant now or let cook for next season. Cost: Your donation to help Woodlawn develop more programs is greatly appreciated.

  • Monday, May 24th, 7 p.m. - Habitat for Humanity and Gardeners
    A free program offered by the Ellsworth Garden Club Join us for an illustrated talk by Habitat for Humanity of Ellsworth.

  • Thursday, May 27th, 7 p.m. - From Peas on a Knife to Peas on a Fork: Towards Genteel Dining in the 1800s; a lecture with food historian and author Sandy Oliver
    Our earliest settlers ate with knife and spoon and often shared food from communal bowls. Sandy Oliver we will explore how we got to forks, individual place settings, and all the trappings of the Victorian dining table.   • Saturday, May 29th, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. - Creative Container Gardens: Big Rewards in Small Spaces
    Learn how you can create a plentiful vegetable garden in a wide variety of imaginative containers on your deck, patio, windowsill or any nook and cranny you can find. Find out about placement, varieties of plants and soil conditions for optimum success in your above ground garden. Cost: Your donation to help Woodlawn develop more programs is greatly appreciated.

  • Friday, June 11th, 9:30 a.m.-12 noon - Paste Paper Workshop with book artists Nancy Leavitt and Liliane Kell
    Paste paper is a type of decorated paper made from a cooked mixture of flour and water to which paint is added. The paste is brushed or sponged onto a wet sheet of paper, a process similar to finger painting. Pattern and texture is achieved by whatever tool is used to spread mixture. In this workshop, you will learn how to make and use paste to create paste paper for use as book covers, in collages or as wrapping paper. Cost: $40 for members/$50 for non-members. Bring an apron and a pair of plastic gloves (optional).

  • Saturday, June 12th, 10:30 a.m.- 12 noon - Backyard Composting
    Master Gardener Volunteers Jan & Tom McIntyre will be covering the basic science behind successful composting. They will teach you how to build and manage a compost pile so you end up with a nice crumbly garden soil amendment within two months. Cost: Your donation to help Woodlawn develop more programs is greatly appreciated.

  • Saturday, June 12th, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. - Make Your Own Trellis with Rustic Furniture Artist Paul Jurutka
    Participant will learn this folk art of building a rustic garden trellis for their garden. Topics will include: selecting and harvesting of readily available woods, setting up a workspace/bench, several ideas of design, various fastening and joining techniques, installation techniques, as well as tools needed to design and create imaginative trellises to add focus, flair or whimsical artistry to their garden. Bring a bag lunch. Cost: $85 for members/ $95 for non-members. Deadline to register: June 1st.

  • Friday, June 18th, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m.-Bookbinding workshop with book artists Nancy Leavitt and Liliane Kell
    Make your own journals while learning the basics of simple bookbinding. We will sew a series of historical and contemporary bindings to help gain skills in handling paper, sewing structures, and making binding tools. Students will complete several different bindings. Cost: $60 for members/$70 for non-members. Bring a bag lunch, apron and a pair of scissors.

  • Monday, June 28th, 7 p.m. - Conservation in Your Own Backyard.
    The In's and Out's of Land Trusts and Conservation Easements -A free program offered by the Ellsworth Garden Club Join us for an illustrated talk by Cheri Domina, executive director of the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust.

  • Tuesday, June 29th, 9 a.m.-12 noon - Care and Storage of Heirloom Textiles with Rosamond Rea, Woodlawn's Collection Manager
    Are you the caretaker of family heirlooms such as quilts, samplers, uniforms and wedding dresses? In this hands-on workshop we will discuss the basics of textile preservation including the identification of materials, agents of deterioration, proper display and proper storage. Woodlawn collections will be used as examples. Participants are encouraged to bring one object for discussion. Each participant will practice making an archival box suitable for textile storage. Materials will be supplied. Cost: $40 for members/$50 for non-members.
