Woodlawn offers a great opportunity for young people to learn about our past.

Get Involved at Woodlawn and help Preserve the Past.

General Information:
Woodlawn Museum welcomes school tours and the opportunity to educate students about the rich heritage of the Downeast Region. As students tour the 19th century mansion, and its original interiors, they can experience life in the 1800s while learning about the important role the Black family played in the development of Maine. The Museum is a time capsule, and is exactly like it was when George Nixon Black, Jr. bequeathed Woodlawn to the public at his death in 1927.

The staff is happy to work with teachers to make a tour of Woodlawn appropriate to the specific needs of your students and the requirements of the Maine Learning Results. All age groups are welcome. Students are led on a tour of the grounds and outbuildings and have the chance to play historic 19th century games on the lawn. Tour lengths vary depending on the schedule of the students but generally, if possible, allow 30-45 minutes for the tour of the mansion and 30 minutes for a tour of the grounds.

Tours are offered from May-October Monday-Friday starting at 9 AM. Other tour arrangements can be made by appointment. We request a ratio of two adults per ten children. The price is $3 per student with no charge for teachers and teacher aides. Parents accompanying the tour receive a 50% admission reduction and coupons for repeat trips. The museum includes a gift shop with many items appropriate for children in the $1 to $5 price range. There is also ample space on the grounds for a picnic lunch. Call the Museum at 207/667-8671 to schedule your tour today or complete the School Tour Request Form and mail it to Woodlawn Museum, PO Box 1478, Ellsworth, Maine 04605.
