George Nixon Black, Jr, left the mansion to the public complete with all its original furnishings. When entering the home, guests feel they have entered a time capsule. Richly furnished and ready for daily life, the house evokes a sense of continued use accurately reflecting the privileged lifestyle of three generations of the Black family.

The collection includes several styles of European and American furniture, portraits and miniatures, mid 19th century carpeting, books, photographs, archival material, sleighs and carriages, and a wide variety of china and glassware all of which was used by the families of John Black, George Nixon Black, and George Nixon Black, Jr. during the time that "Woodlawn" served as their home. Highlights of the collection include a bed purchased by John and Mary Black in 1827 still with its original bed curtains, a labeled William Fisk dining table, and silk embroideries stitched by nieces of Mary Black. According to his wishes, additional artifacts identified as "family pieces" were brought from George Nixon Black, Jr.'s other two homes in Massachusetts and added to the Woodlawn collection after his death. The collection reflects the determination of George Nixon Black, Jr. to make Woodlawn a permanent memorial to his father's and grandfather's success. In addition to its fine decorative arts, Woodlawn Museum houses two important archival collections: the business records of Colonel John Black and his son George Nixon Black, and the records of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations.
